So, a brief description of baby bear:

classic. loves to dress old school or practical. i’m shooting down anyone who will tell me to buy him clothes or accessories because:

I forget his shirt size, pant size, coat size.
He shops his own things because he is damn particular about it. :/

loves liquor, particularly whiskeys, bourbons and anything along those lines. dilemmas:

i dont want to support alcoholism. :/

making the dobos torte, pt.1

it is my baby boy’s birthday.

so the plan is make some rice stick noodles, then a homemade cake.

the cake is… well it is more of a torte.

you see, tortes are technically nut based cakes, but the hungarians had something different in mind. Well, one of them. His name is Mr. Dobos, hence the name of the torte.

Its like seven sister’s cake you can buy in Michigan, but instead of chocolate buttercream and simple sponge, I put a hint of cocoa in it and use strawberry mousse filling.

I assume it will be a tall cake.

this is half of the day, and the cakes will be out later. the fillings and frosting will be made, courtesy of baby bear, who provided the batter recipe himself from AllRecipes.

With little tweaks of course. Because I only followed it until step 2.

The changes I made though is to add 2 tbsp of cocoa instead of the flour. Oh, and dust your cake pans well. like, Pam it then dust it. it makes the cake easier to come out.

Dobos Torte

Mine yielded 5 layers of the cake, so I think it depends on how much you put in the cake pans. They rise too, so take that in mind.

Ingredients

8 eggs, yolk and whites separated
1/3 granulated sugar
2/3 confectioner’s sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon lemon zest
1 pinch salt
1 tbsp plum wine (you can use 2 tbsp of vanilla here. but i don’t have it, and neither is sherry until tomorrow. oh well.)
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 tbsp cocoa (i used Hershey’s special dark, oh and sift it!)

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Spray 2 nine inch cake pans with cooking spray, then dust the whole thing with flour.
Beat the egg whites until frothy, and gradually add 1 cup sugar. Beat just to soft peaks. In another bowl, beat the yolks with the milk, lemon peel, wine or vanilla, and salt. Fold this into the egg whites. Sift the flour over the egg mixture, then the cocoa and fold in.
Spread 1 1/3 cups batter into the prepared pan. Bake for about 5 to 9 minutes, or until small, brown spots begin to appear on cake. Remove the cake from the oven, and remove layer from pan with a spatula. Dust the cake lightly with flour, and place on a rack to cool. Grease pan again, and repeat this process until all of the batter is used, about 6 times more. Place the layers between wax paper, and cover with a towel. Chill layers for a few hours.

good for you. don’t lose hope..and if things really are that worse, well. when i found out about my parents’ problems, and the fact that as their daughter i dont have anything to undo or change it, i just resolve to myself and to my boyfriend that these kinds of problems should not be allowed to happen, after all, we make out our own life. :)
